Meet Krantz, the Psychedelic Rocker of Your Dream

Krantz is no stranger to the music industry. From touring with Kings of Leon, Toadies, and many more major names in rock music, the singer has more than enough experience to craft his own unforgettable music. “Beach (Moonlight Rendezvous” is a current favorite and the stellar music video paints a picture of what can be expected from the artist going into 2022.

Krantz’s latest single, “Louisiana,” is a massively successful alt-rock ballad with tons of heart and a powerful reminder that anything can be permanently altered by the experiences and emotions we surround it with.

Krantz had the chance to sit down and answer some questions for Medium readers. It’s refreshing to get to know an artist who is so open and spreads positivity in their work, and we love that Krantz is bringing back rock music of the 90s and infusing psychedelic influences shaped by acts like The Beatles . Be sure to listen to “Louisiana” below and start streaming HERE.

Your new single “Louisiana” reminds us of some alternative rock and punk-rock acts that shaped the early 2000s. What artists or songs specifically inspired your creation of this single?

Yeah, it definitely has that vibe, and I used to be in a pop punk band, so I’m sure that had some influence on the sound of “Louisiana.” I can’t think of any specific song that inspired me, but I still listen to lots of 90’s/early 2000s bands like Weezer (though they’re still killing it,) Everclear, and Blink 182.

Was the creative process for this single different from other songs you’ve written since it is so emotional?

Not too different honestly. I wrote it with a couple friends of mine, so I guess that’s a little different. Joel King and I mapped out the arrangement and melodies, and then Sheyna Gee and I worked out the lyrics. It’s not based on a specific occasion (I truly do love Louisiana) but it’s something that we could relate to, so it was fun to write.

You’ve previously said that “Louisiana” was based on the concept of associating a place or thing with a memory or person and how powerful that association is. Do you have another story similar to this one?

Well I never go to this taco joint I love here in Nashville because my ex works there…

What has been your greatest challenge throughout the 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic and the fallout we’ve continued experiencing in 2021? Has it changed your perception of your career?

Probably playing shows. I’ve done a few since the pandemic started, but it’s much tougher to set something up and then get the people to come out.

You’ve toured with some awesome acts. Is there a specific moment you remember fondly that keeps you going and focused despite the challenges you’ve faced during the last two years?

I have played a lot of cool shows with a lot of cool bands, so there’s many amazing times I can remember. One of the latest times that made an imprint was at Summeriest in Milwaukee, WI in the summer of 2018. We played the Miller Lite stage opening for Borns, and I just remember groups of people in the crowd, though probably had never heard of us, would get up and dance and I could tell they were feeling it. That’s what makes it all worth it.

What would you tell artists who are trying to break into the industry?

Write good songs and don’t conform!

Do you have a mantra or quote that inspires you? What does it mean to you as an individual?

“Love is the absence of judgement”-the Dalai Lama. Love everyone!

You’re really bringing back psychedelic rock with your brand and sound. Was this a natural angle for you to take or did you have to develop this over time?

Hey, thanks for noticing! My fave band of all time is the Beatles and I love 60s music, so that definitely comes through in my sound. It’s always fun to experiment with different sounds and such, and that’s a very psychedelic practice I feel.

What’s coming next? Do you anticipate doing more live performances as 2022 continues to open the world back up?

I have a new album in the works. Almost done with the recording part, so I will spend the winter getting it finished up and ready for an early spring 2022 release. I’m working with a new producer here in Nashville named Wyatt Whit, and having self produced most of my work, it’s fun to have someone else chipping in with new ideas and sounds. Will definitely be playing more in 2022 and hopefully be back on the road and coming to a city near you!!! Thanks so much for having me! Peace and love y’all!
